Outdoorsman: Arrow of Light Required Adventure

This is a required adventure used to earn the Arrow of Light Badge.

I decided to complete Option A:

Requirement A1: With the help of your den leader of family, plan and participate in a campout.

This summer I went camping with my pack at Point Lookout. (6/3/2017)

Requirement A2: On arrival at the campout, with your den and den leader or family, determine where to set up your tent. Demonstrate knowledge of what makes a good tent site and what makes a bad one. Set up your tent without help from an adult.

We arrived a day after the pack arrived. Two of my friends had already set up a tent. Mr. Jim said that if I could get them to break it down and get them to help me set it back up then I could get this marked off. So my friends helped me take the tent down and we worked together to set it back up. We talked about what makes a good tent site and what makes a bad one while breaking it down and before we put it back up. (6/3/2017)

I also reviewed what makes a good tent site and what makes a bad one at Day Camp. (6/26/2017)

Requirement A3: Once your tents are set up, discuss with your den or family what actions you should take in the case of the following extreme weather events which could require you to evacuate.

I did this at day camp but also reviewed with Mr. Jim at Soldiers Delight. (7/22/2017)

a. Severe rainstorm causing flooding: Move to higher ground avoid streams and ditches. If you can, go inside. (6/26/2017)
b. Severe thunderstorm with lightning or tornadoes. If you can go into the basement and stay there. If you are outside, you need to find a ditch and stay as low as you can. If you can find a basement go in there and get low and wait. (6/26/2017)
c. Fire, earthquake, or other disaster that will require evacuation. Discuss what you have done to minimize as much danger as possible. Listen to your Den Leader. Your Den Leader will give you instructions and you need to do what he says and wait for further instructions. (6/26/2017)

Requirement A4: Show how to tie a bowline. Explain when this know should be used and why. Teach it to another Scout who is not a Webelos Scout.

Requirement A5: Recite the Outdoor Code and the Leave No Trace Principles for Kids from memory. Talk about how you can demonstrate them while you are working on your Arrow of Light. After one outing, list the things you did to follow the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace.

At Day Camp we had an "Outdoor Skills" station and I was able to recite the Outdoor Code and the Leave No Trace Principles from memory and I received two special beads for my hat. (6/26/2017)

Jeremiah reviewed the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles for Kids with Mr. Jim at Soldiers Delight. (7/22/2017)
